what was he even trying to say in the first place??

This is a problematic discourse because religion itself is poorly defined. I've read arguments about football being religion (not just a joke, but an actual reasoned argument) because of the role it plays in people's lives, because people gather together in one place once a week to feel part of a larger community, because there are rituals and songs and a sense of identity, because people have their ashes scattered at stadiums, because stadiums announce births, deaths, and illnesses of members of the "congregation" and ask everyone to join together in meditative silence to celebrate/mourn/wish those people well, etc. The ways football fandom differs from most organized western religion exist, but many legitimate, recognized religions differ in those same ways - many sects of Islam lack structure, hierarchy, ritual, and even lack dogma. And Anglicans can't even agree on whether or not they believe in a higher power at all or just that there might be the possibility something more than the physical world we can observe.
