What and how do long distance relationships work for you?

It's not just the US, I am from France and while people would agree living an hour from your boyfriend is a pain in the ass, it wouldn't be viewed as a long-distance relationship. Regardless of how people view it in your particular area, it's clear that it's a bit of a hassle but not a huge impediment to have to drive an hour to see your SO, especially when you already enjoy a short-ish commute.

I mean, you say it yourself: you see each other almost as much as if you lived 10 mn from one another and that "there isn't that much difference".

the fact that we see each other every weekend doesn't magically negate the distance, it just means that we prioritise seeing each other, and are lucky that the train ticket for him isn't that expensive, and that the drive isn't too far for me to do.

Right "the drive isn't too far" is a different way of saying "there is not a long distance between our places". Being able to see each other is not just a question of prioritising, it plays a role obviously but it's also rendered possible by living a relatively short distance from one another.
