What if I told you my team and I are almost done building an alternative to Twitter?

Features that are absolutely necessary when launching: - Likes and Retweets. Getting a like or a retweet is what injects your brain with dopamine which will keep people coming back. Of course, you will have to call it Re-somethingelse, whatever you're going to call a message instead of a tweet. A "like" on Twitter is actually a bookmark and all of a user's likes are available on their profile page... you do NOT need this. A like should be like a Thumbs Up on Facebook: an expression of approval and that's it. - Trending hashtags. You want people to have a reason to be there and give them a way to join a conversation. You do NOT need trending phrases (e.g. "Brian Dawkins" or some other name or phrase without a hashtag) yet, not to mention that be much harder to program than trending hashtags. - A working Block button in a very visible place on every tweet. On Twitter right now, from left to right, under a tweet you've got the reply button, retweet button, like button and the triple dots for extra features. I say this new service should have, from left to right, the reply button, retweet button, like button, the extra features button, then all the way to the right should be the block button. If someone is harassing me I should be able to instantly shut them down. People like Leslie Jones probably didn't know the block button existed which is why she went nuts. Use the https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/3/31/ProhibitionSign2.svg/276px-ProhibitionSign2.svg.png sign. For the longest time I thought I had to go to a user's page to block them. Harassment is a problem on Twitter because people can't find the block button! - "Followers" listed on your profile page. I think it's necessary to have a visible measure of a user's popularity. - A generic "report" button to report illegal activity like child porn

Things that would be nice to have when launching: - A way to "protect" your account. It becomes impractical to block 1,000 users who are trolling you. There needs to be a way to instantly shut down a troll attack. Since the population numbers of this new service will take a while to get up there, you may be able to delay this.

Things that you DON'T need right now: - Notifications for anything other than direct replies, tweets, and retweets. "tweet you were mentioned in" is spammy and a pain in the ass to program. - Direct messages. - "Who to Follow"

Things that would be nice to have in the future: - A way to hide who you're following. People can experience harassment, for example, for following certain people.

The most important part of launching this thing is that it CANNOT be a place where: - users can easily harass others (this is why a clear block button visible on every tweet is crucial) - spreading child porn or other illegal stuff is tolerated

If you don't have enough security features and a staff to stop harassment, you bet your ass Jack Dorsey is going to hire people from India to make accounts on your new service and have them harass your users. Don't think this is far fetched: BILLIONS of dollars are at stake here.
