What industry should we just let die?

The manufacturer can provide their own sales and service centers. It's not about getting ride of the location, it's about getting rid of the middle man.

(numbers to follow made up).

Car Company sells Dealer a car for $10,000. Dealer list prices it at 20,000, then "haggles" it down to 15,000. They make a 50% profit off the vehicle, when if you could go to the dealer directly you could have just paid that 10,000.

This is such a big deal that "traditional" automotive dealers and the manufacturers that provide them with cars actually lobby congress and state legislators to make direct sales illegal. This is what has impeded Tesla, who has been trying direct sales in several states.
