What kind of battery should I get? Confused

75 hp mercury outboard here. You want a full sized deep cycle battery. They are a little less than $100(sometimes they are $100). You do not need a two battery system. If you are worried about getting stranded. I would keep an eye on slickdeals and find a battery jump starter thing. You can find them for around $30. Made for cars but will work for your boat.

We run a marine radio & fish finder for HOURS with the motor turned off. We have a 5 hp pull start outboard to troll or get us home if we need to. We replace the battery every 4 years.

You should also buy fuses. You're going to eventually need one to get you home.

Change out your impeller ever 3 years. If you don't know when its been done last you need to do it. Always make sure your outboard pisses water. If it doesn't. Shut it down immediately. Swapping out the impeller is super easy to do. Just watch some youtube videos.

Also, your lower unit oil will need to be replaced yearly. If you know how to turn a screw driver you can do it yourself. When you change your lower unit oil make sure you replace the washers around the screws each time.

Then there is oil. If its a 2 stroke you're going to have to mix oil with the gas unless it has an oil mixture container inside the motor. If its a 4 stroke you're fine as it doesn't burn oil. You just need to do standard oil changes.

Grab the serial # off your motor. Its on right hand side of the motor somewhere. Look up the proper shop manual. It might take some work but somewhere someone has uploaded it somewhere. Mercury also has a part catalog that you can look up part #'s for your motor and just order them off ebay for a fraction of the cost you'll pay locally. The shop manual will most likely tell you officially what battery you're supposed to use. We just spend the ~$100 and its fine.

If you have any questions. Let me know.
