What was the last good zombie movie in theatres?

I mean sure - the set pieces were pretty astounding at times. I just can't get over a few things:

  • The zombies smelling cancer and whatever is strange; it's basically implying that these are mutants or something, not the classic 'undead'. This is fine, but really unexplained in the film. Do the 'zombies' get their sense of smell enhanced thousands of times?

  • The part where Pitt injects himself with some pathogen, and 'guesses' which one is curable - a major point of tension in the 3rd act. He had a whiteboard and the phone outside the quarantine room worked. He could have just written a pathogen on the board for the camera and had them ring twice for no, ring once for yes.

  • His family only existed in the plot to fuck him over that one time by calling his satellite phone and alerting the zombies. There's literally no other reason to justify their inclusion. (I know that there was an entire subplot about life on the flotilla that got cut, in which she becomes a prostitute of sorts to keep herself and daughters safe even though they have no skills.)

Entertaining, but not enduring. I'd still give a sequel a shot though.
