What is 'life' like in the Age of Sigmar universe?

GW is frustratingly abstract about the lore.

There ARE cities in the mortal planes. In fact, some of the largest are placed around or near Realmgates, as it makes trading between realms quite possible. Food can be grown in the realm of Life, shipped in to several other realms, for example, or the people within that realm can grow their own food potentially.

People live in every realm of the mortal planes, as well as in the realm of Chaos. It isn't always a well-adjusted life, but it is life, nonetheless. However, other than Hammerhal and various Duardin skycities, we don't really have any concrete cities just yet. Games workshop has given us a massive sandbox to play in, create our own lore and stories to play around with. Unfortunately, this sandbox is so large that at the moment, it looks like a massive-ass desert.
