what is it that you like about trap?

What first appealed to me in trap was the strong hip-hop influence. My first real trap song I liked was probably RL Grime's Love Sosa remix and I don't think I was listening to rap trap at that time, maybe Gucci here and there. So EDM trap is what introduced me to rap trap, but I still explored both genres. I like the hip-hop influence while maintaining that "EDM" presence. Being a DJ, playing live shows, mixing. Before RL Grime, I was listening to dubstep like Flux and Skrillex. I loved it. The cultural relevance also played a massive role in why I like trap. Being able to play it loud with friends and have everybody enjoy it was great. It was the only EDM you could really turn to if you were with a group of people who only liked rap.

I'd say that right now I don't follow either genre all that much anymore. EDM trap has gotten stale to me, and I rarely enjoy a track unless it's has some future bass or dubstep in it. I think I feel a stronger connection now with artists who are growing and changing. When a song sounds more like an instrumental hip-hop track, I tend to like it more. I'm not so much interested in the flailing, violent sounds of trap anymore, I'm more interested in the intricate songs that aren't necessarily bangers. I enjoy it most when a trap producer makes music for a rap musician. I think that's where the sweet-spot is for me. Like some of those songs off of the Vince Staples album are my favorite hip-hop songs yet. The songs with SOPHIE and GTA are great, and I feel that it's people like them who are pushing the boundaries for artists who have been tagged as trap musicians. Even with the Charli XCX album, I find myself deeply immersed in the side-projects of popular EDM artists. It's unique to me to see this style mesh with other genres.

Long story short, what I like about trap right now, is the influence it gets from hip-hop. I'm not as interested in the EDM trap as I was years ago, but I'm also not that interested in trap with actual rapping in it. I think I lean more towards the favor of instrumental hip-hop but in the flavor of trap. Idk I'm high too
