When you run a game, most of them, especially from evil publishers will have systems that steal your data and phone home with it , so they can use you for marketing purposes. That's the real threat. A theoretical threat would be something malicious like a keylogger or a virus. Blocking the game from the internet prevents it from communicating with the developer server, and gives you back control over your information. Just plugging out the ethernet may also not work because some save that data as a cookie and send it whenrever internet is available.
