What little things in life should we not take for granted?

I think about this a lot as I need happy thoughts. Here's my list: * Bed. Bed is the best place ever and having one that is even vaguely comfortable puts you ahead of most of the world's population.

  • A good strong cup of tea/coffee in the morning. I'm a tea drinker and a good cup of tea will solve just about anything. I'm not even British but I swear by the curative powers of tea.
  • On the drinks front, an ice cold beer on a really hot day.
  • Seeing your loved one(s) walk in the door, safe and home and with you. Best thing ever.
  • Completing a huge and challenging crossword and doing it in pen because you feel invincible.
  • A perfectly sharpened pencil springs to mind. It's just so goddamn satisfying.
  • The moment when you're really sick and the fever breaks. All the sweat on your body goes cool and your body temperature adjusts back to normal and you feel alive in a strange way that being healthy never gave you.
  • Old people. Best stories in the world. Also, they know everything about everything because they've been there and done that. Value your elders, they're a treasure to those who come after them.
  • Walking into the bathroom in socks and your socks DON'T get wet. Happy times.
  • Getting a really high score on a little known/used word in Scrabble. For me at least, I was on a high for days.
  • Helping somebody in a significant way, and seeing their life change. Even if you have very little, you can still change a life. Pro life tip - if you're ever in real trouble, go to your poorest friends/neighbours/family. Most generous people I've ever met. Return said favour or favours as soon as you can.
  • Watching someone you love lying in a hospital bed, and seeing their chest rising and falling. You have no idea how much people take that simple rising and falling for granted. Sometimes seeing a person breathe is the best thing in the world.
  • Having water. That comes out of a tap. On command. It's not a luxury, to me it's a basic human right. You'd be amazed how many people don't have it though.
  • Finding a pair of matching socks that have no holes in them. It's almost impossible but when it happens, it's glorious.
  • Finding forgotten money in your pockets when you're doing the laundry. Even better when you REALLY need it.
  • Looking at something beautiful - a sunrise, a painting that really talks to you, an elderly couple holding hands as they walk down the road. And being aware that it's beautiful and that you need to remember it forever. And then you do.
  • Reunions at airports. Sometimes I just want to get popcorn and watch people come home and embrace their loved ones. I could do that forever. So many tears of joy, and hugs, and happy faces.
  • Pickles. Pickles are the bomb. If you have someone to open the jar for you too, you're golden.
  • Books. Especially old ones. That smell when you flip the pages fast just under your nose. I'm not sure that there could be a better smell than that. It's the smell of the ages and the thoughts of men. Encompassed and put onto paper and into ink. Crazy when you think about it deeply.
  • Having someone say something nice to you and you know that they mean it. There's no agenda, they're just complimenting you and they're sincere. I love that. Makes my day.

I could go on for ages but I think this is long enough.
