What was the longest minute of your life?

My then 13-year old son with autism and impulse control issues read on the internet that nutmeg can get you high. He then mixed 5T of nutmeg into a glass of water and drank it. Three hours later, he went into cardiac arrest. There was no time to wait for the ambulance, I sped him to the hospital myself. The one minute where he was on the table being revived by doctors? Yep. That was the longest minute of my life right there.

I remember being so angry, at the possibility of losing my son to something so stupid that he did, not knowing any better. I don't know how I would have coped had he died that night.

In cases where a child is hurt, they send in a social worker to talk to you and make sure there was no abuse or neglect. After I'd gone through this ordeal, the guy came in with his little clipboard. I told him, "Look, sir...if you can honestly look me in the eye and tell me that you have ever even heard of a situation like this one or think it could have possibly been prevented, I promise you that I'll listen patiently to whatever you're about to say. Otherwise, I think we're done here."

He put his pen behind his ear, shook my hand, and left the room. The hospital then added nutmeg to their list of "potential hazardous substances."
