What is the meanest thing you've done to another person?

Not me. but my grand mother (that I never met because as she died to young but that story is quite famous in my family).

That happened in Sicily. Every body in the village was very poor, most men working in the sulfur mine nearby.

One guy left Sicily for Belgium to try making a better future. He left wife and 4 kids and if all would went well, he would try to get them join him later on (this was quite common).

He was sending her letters with some cash and words. But that was not enough, so his wife, who was a good friend of my grand mother, was working as a cleaning lady at the mine's office, asking my grand mother to take care of the kids while she was working.

One they, the letters stopped coming, which was literally a drama.

First, her cleaning lady income was not enough to feed 4 kids and as every body in the family was very poor, she had no other choice than starting making debts to some usurers.

But the worst part was of not knowing what was going on. It was in the 40's, in an isolated village on a highland, there was 1 telephone at the town hall for the entire village and it was basically only used to announce the bad news. Maybe something bad happened to her husband, maybe he found another wife and decided to forget her and the kids. Maybe he died and she would never know what happened. She was dying inside more and more every day of not knowing and was keeping that secret, except to her best friend.

Soon enough, my grand mother start getting suspicions of what was going on when she saw one the neighbour girl of that poor woman with a new dress from a shop in the city. Every woman were sewing their own clothes in the village. A dress from a shop in the city was expensive, even travelling to the city was expensive on its own. A few weeks later, she saw her at the church with new shoes, ... the suspicion grew again.

One day, she decided to turn James Bond mode on, asked her sister to keep the kids and went to spy on that girl. She quickly found out that her and the postman were partners in crime. she was having an affair with the postman, who did not have yet officially asked her . You guessed the rest of the story, those 2 were partners in crime to steal the letters and the cash. But the postman had a wife, and the bitch had an husband, and in Sicilian village, when you want to make accusation, would better have some solid proof.
