What minor things get your blood boiling?

Grocery cashier here, and I HATE working express! It all depends on how much management cares. At my store, we're expected to uphold the 12 or less rule, the idea being that if I'm ringing up someone with over the limit and someone gets in line with less than 12, that person waiting has every right to complain. Makes sense, right? It's express for a reason, people! But some customers just don't want to accept that; it's express if that's what's convenient for them, regular lane if that's more convenient.

I tend to get more shitty entitled customers in express because they want to fudge the rules. Plenty of people who don't/can't count want to think if they have a basket (no matter how full) instead of cart that's good enough, and the same people will get offended when you remind them it's 12 or less. They want to have a "close enough" mentality and expect you to ring them up, to the point some even load up their items anyway to try and force their way. GLEE is what I feel if they do have more than 12 and I just stand there and remind them the rule until they go.

Once there was a grown man with a full basket but he did have 12 or less so I rang him up. He asked why it mattered so much and when I tried to answer he cuts me off anyway and was overall a huge grumpypants the entire transaction. (Now I know it's just easier to say I could get in trouble.) I didn't tell him to have a nice day.

Another time an older woman and her adult son came through with FULL carts. The woman was driving the motorized cart, and her son tried to fight me because the regular lanes were narrow and difficult for her to drive through. So... instead of him helping her in a regular lane, they wanted to use express. We were super busy of course, with a line already forming behind these two even before I was ringing them. I should mention our express doesn't have the moving belts, just limited counter space and I also didn't have a bagger so I'd have to ring some items, stop to bag, hand the bags over, they'd put more up, and repeat until done. But he really wanted to fight me on it so I got manager's approval (though of course the guy was already pissed off and getting what he wanted didn't change that). So I ring up his mom, we finish, and then he, a completely able person, wants me to ring up his big cart next. Like, okay, your mom had the scooter, but what's your excuse? I just wanted to get the line moving so I rang him up and finished. The people behind him literally had a few items in their arms and I felt so bad for them because again, we were busy and all the other lanes had long lines with big carts.

Here's some positive though: there are also people who, when you point out it's express, they'll just say "Oh okay" and move on, maybe even a woops sorry. Those are the people I'm grateful for, the ones who make me feel sometimes bad for having to turn down customers at all. Others just can't handle the rejection from a lowly cashier.
