For those curious about where the Jennifer Garner meme comes from, it’s at timestamp 1:51:41 of the (3 hour long) 2018 Oscars. It took some digging, but it’s at the end of the musical performance by Andra Day and Common, “Stand up for something”. In the recording, several audience members seem confused and stop clapping. It happens at the end of the musical performance when a musician onstage unfurls a large Puerto Rico flag on stage. Per a YT comment I found [on this video ](youtube.com/watch?v=UqHG6qBEs4M), a conjecture is that people maybe didn’t recognize the flag and/or maybe assumed that something “bad” was happening (like a protest). Could just be general confusion as well, at not knowing what is going to happen next. So mystery (somewhat) solved!
