What do us Northerners sound like to Southerners? Do we have accents?

It’s the same here in Australia. We have the north and south accents. The north is more laid-back and casual and long term locals have a more relaxed accent and speak slower (but not like those cowboy people in movies). Southern states seem to have a more pronounced accent, they speak quickly and fully pronounce their words.

South Australia wasn’t populated with convicts and was settled by people coming in mostly from England. They are a bit more proper with their language and will say FrAnce (Fruhnce) while the rest will say Fraance. DAnce vs Daance (using an uh sound to go up in the word). Some also say ‘laygo’ instead of lego which drove me nuts when I lived there as a teenager.

Depending on which state/territory you live in will also dictate words you use or how you say it. A bathing suit, depending on where you learnt to talk or where your parents are from, is called either bathers, togs, a cosi, swimmers, or swimsuit. I usually say bathers which I think is from the state my parents grew up in (not the one I grew up in).

My brother and I speak differently. We did 10 years in the north as kids then moved south with mum. I moved back 13 years ago while he stayed south. His accent is a bit nearer than mine.
