What have people said to you while playing in public?

  • No. 1- College.

Just waiting on a bench while playing the Switch until someone comes along.

Them: "What's that?"

Me: "Nintendo Switch."

Them: "You still play that kiddy Nintendo?" Laughs.

Me: I happen to enjoy it. And if it's all the same to you. Please leave me alone. You're being a disturbance.

  • Gets offended and tries to start a console war I guess? I just got up and put earphones in and left.

No.2 - Bus stop.

Waiting at the bus stop and pulled it out and was playing Mario Kart. I didn't notice these two kids who arrived and who were staring at me until I checked my phone to see my bus was arriving 15 minutes late.

Now. Normally I HATE kids. Especially the ones where I live. They are ALWAYS some bratty uptight brat. But these two kids were positively adorable. Without a single word. I set up 2p mode at 100cc and offered each a joycon and set up and used my leg as a stand for them to both play Mario Kart. They had this look to their eyes and looked so cute while they were completely awestruck while turning to see their dad who was watching me like a hawk before he let them play and gave me a grateful smile.

After about 5 races their time was up. And the mother who was less than pleasant showed up. And saw me and instantly ushered her kids away while attempting to take my Switch claiming I took it from them and some other random nonsense.

Thankfully the dad managed to sit her ass down and give me my stuff back with a generous 50 USD for the trouble.

No. 3. (I don't even know what to make of it.)

In college again.

Waiting on the same bench as last time when this rather quiet girl appeared out of literally nowhere. Not a single peep. I only noticed her from that feeling you get when you're being watched.

And this literally happened.

Her: "..." Stares

Me: "..." Blinks before staring back for about 2 seconds.

Go back to game.

"..." Still feeling the stare.

Slightly scoot over.

She sits down next to me.

Just finished a Race in Mario Kart. Gets sudden suspicion she's still watching. So I go into 2p mode.

Pass a Joycon to her.

We proceed to play for about 30 minutes.

Realize the sky was turning orange. She saw me look up so she passes me the Joycon back. I take it with a nod. And soon put away the Joycon and get up. I looked and gave a smile and waved before leaving. She stops me with her hand for a minute and we ended up trading numbers.

And I just realized we STILL don't know each other's names.

So. One hostile, one semi-hostile, and rather interesting encounter.

So hey. The Switch is an interesting magnet.
