What is Planned Parenthood and why is it causing so much controversy?

Planned Parenthood is a government clinic that is primarily associated with abortions. Yes, they do other things, but ask anyone on the left or the right to name the first word that comes to mind when you say "planned parenthood" and the answer will likely be "abortion.", plus any attention it gets is going to have to do with abortion, not mammograms or condoms. The left wants PP because it's the main place a woman can get an abortion with little or no cost, the right doesn't want PP because they are opposed to abortion and don't want to fund it with their tax dollars.

PP is getting a lot of controversy lately because a group of pro-life activists used hidden cameras to get dirt on Planned Parenthood. Undercover journalism akin to Sinclaire and Tarbell in the early 1900s has become more common tool for conservatives in recent years, effectively shutting down another government organization called ACORN after they filmed a hidden camera conversation with interns agreeing to aid a man's prostitution ring.

The contents of the video mostly show three disturbing aspects. The first is interns readily admitting to selling aborted fetal tissue or organs depending on how developed the fetus was (which is illegal). The second shows doctors handling barely alive fetuses in a very mechanical manner, as if they are dealing with car parts instead of human lives. The third aspect is interviews from women who didn't consent to donating fetal tissue (also illegal).

Critics of the video say that it's edited or doctored, but any video with an excessive amount of filmed content will have to be condensed for viewing, and any professional film maker knows this. CMP managed to film hundreds of hours of material, and a lot of it is simply irrelevant to the point they are trying to make, so stuff like sitting in waiting rooms, and small talk will be cut, but anyone who desires to watch those parts can see them since CMP has posted the full, unedited raw footage as well.

The most frustrating part of this type of controversy is that it deals with subject matter that a lot of people don't even want to research. Abortion tends to be idealized on both sides, based on how people imagine it to be, but the videos give a look into an organization that is funded with public money, but operates behind closed doors. Whatever opinion you may have on it, it should at least be an informed one. Even watching the trailer videos would be enough.
