What is a red flag from an employer that people might not immediately recognize as a red flag?

If you do this shitkicker job for a year we'll move you in to the position your aiming for, as soon as the vacancy comes up.

Thankfully I moved into that position from another company, but I see it happen every year.

They'll take on a bunch of people with that promise, a year will come up, no position, a bit more time will pass and then they'll end up hiring externally anyway. Or there'll only be one position from the five or so that are vying for it. Then everyone will quit around the same time. Suddenly we're short staffed, training up new people, and the cycle repeats.

It cultivates a bad culture. All the new people are at each other's throats, and there's a brain drain of people who are actually good leaving for something more realistic.
