What’s actually the cause of the labor shortages? How do I respond to the very annoying and trite answer my FIL gives that: “Nobody wants to work anymore!!! This generation is lazy and getting handed money by the government!!”

A lot of service industry jobs that are suffering from a “labor” shortage also refuse to hire/staff full time employees for lower ranking positions, so they can avoid paying any benefits. I’m a stay at home mom with a part time job (15 hours a week) in a chain food service place. My store is super short staffed and we can’t hire new people to fill all the open shifts we have. We have multiple existing part time team members who are ready and willing to work full time, but corporate won’t let them, cause then they’d be entitled to benefits. I’ve worked in food/retail for over a decade, at a management level before I had kids, and this is a common practice everywhere. Pretty much every mall retail store, chain movie theaters, chain fast food places, etc all adhere to this standard.
