Also, Dostoyevsky has a subtlety that is quite... Aural... I don't like to reduce it to such a clinical term as "psychological". I think it makes him sound like an overblown detective novelist.

I should also say that with a writer like him, Russian to French, Italian or Spanish works better than to English. I noticed that Dostoyevsky's prose in English translations feels quite diluted in comparison, even if nothing can take away from the solid elements of the story.

I think that is a general rule with the 19th century non-Anglo novel. It is only with Beckett that the modernist condensation translates solidly between non-conjugated and conjugated languages.
