What’s downtown San Diego like?

Dude. We're talking about specific neighborhoods, not the city as a whole. Your City-wide stats aren't apples to apples.

I work downtown. I'm there most days of the week. I pulled the crime stats before I even made my comment. "Safer than most other big cities" still isn't super safe, or clean.

Go look at this list and look at Core-Columbia, Gaslamp, and East Village.. Are you telling me those neighborhoods are super safe? Many neighborhoods in San Diego are super safe. Others are worse. Overall, I still think giving the impression that downtown is super safe without giving a few important caveats is not cool.

If you stay in certain hotels, and you want to go to certain other places downtown, you have to walk through some fairly isolated and crappy areas. My wife and myself both have been harassed by crazy people downtown, during the day and night.

I'm not even saying not to go downtown, just to be realistic in what we tell people about it. Like New York City. Go, because it's amazing, but just be observant.
