What’s going on in France?

It's called the yellow vest protest, or movement because of the safety jackets they wear. People are protesting general neglect of the lower class and country citizens. The final trigger was that the government was going to raise taxes on gasoline to move towards reaching their climate accord goal, but this disproportionately affected country people because they have to drive into the cities to work and generally make lower wages anyway. The President has since retracted the plan to raise gas taxes, but there have apparently been a couple of decades of build-up to this protest from similar treatment of the lower class. Also, there have been some violent incidents during the protests, like vandalism and looting, but these are mostly intentionally violent groups taking advantage of the situation.
