What’s was the moment a “professional” lost all credibility to you?

I was working at a big-dick law firm as a pretty specialized support staff.

A paralegal who had just come from another big law firm (known for being a much more 'intense' place) gives me something to have filed with the courts. It was 4:30pm on a Friday and he wanted it filed immediately.

Well, cool. But he sent me 43 attachments all but 1 of which was incorrectly formatted for the court system.

So I take it upon myself to reformat these massive PDFs instead of bouncing it back to him like I should have.

10 minutes later I get a call asking why I haven't sent confirmation. It wasn't a "Hey, I'm nervous about the deadline, how are things going?" kind of a gentle nudge. It was a "Why haven't you sent confirmation yet?"

I inform him of his fuckup and how I'm already 1/3rd of the way through reformatting the documents he sent me.

Less than 5 minutes later, he sends up his assistant to see what's going on. She clearly sees that I'm working diligently on his filing. She apologizes about the guy and leaves.

5 minutes later HE COMES INTO MY OFFICE WITH HER and he asks me whats happening. At this point, I'm fucking done with this joker. I take calls from everyone all up and down the food chain at the firm. Corner partners call me up for help all the way down to the gofers who print documents and hole punch them. This paralegal is trying to pull some macho-chest puffing shit on me.

I promptly put him in his place by telling him how things work at the law firm. Now, at this time, I was like 24 years old, but I had been at the firm for a couple of years and this guy just got there, and I was fucking sick of him trying to stand over my shoulder to fix his fuckup faster, so I told him it will be done before 5pm.

Just then, a partner pokes his head in and tells me he's got work for me tomorrow and wanted to give me a heads up. Fuckboy leaves.

I do the work. I send him the confirmation, no big deal. I then clock out and head up to the top floor of our building for our weekly happy-hour. His assistant shows up about 20 minutes later looking flustered.

Apparently, homeboy sent her up to spy on my because he thought I was blowing him off. And when she said I was fixing the formatting, he thought I was lying (for some unknown fucking reason) and he came back to my office.

When I told him off and about how some extra notice would have avoided all of this, (and the partner dropped by to give me notice) he went down to his office and punched the wall of the elevator in front of his assistant.

He apparently didn't take kindly to a 24 year old telling him off. When his assistant explained it to me and how he went from like red in the face to totally chill when I sent the confirmation, I just lost all respect.

Like, clearly he's worried about his filing. He's new to the firm. The firm only handled big cases for the most part. It was a complex filing for some multi-billion dollar case. But jesus fucking christ. I would handle multi-million dollar lawsuits every day. Filings like that were not rare by any means, they just need a bit more time.

Anywho. After cocktail hour, I head home and I check my work email one more time before I jump on the ol' rocket-league machine. He sent me an apology for getting heated, sorta blamed the attorneys for dicking him around, and said he'd reach out earlier in the process to keep me informed.

My reply, "Don't worry about it. I'm a professional; I'd never let a little stress get to me."
