What’s that one campfire story that made you get scared shitless?

At my summer camp there was this horror story about a man who lived across the lake which was forbidden territory. I forget exactly what it was but I think the man lived in a shack or something and ate kids? But even as elementary schoolers no one believed it. Well we were all at the lake once and the only thing you could do was canoe and swim. They usually had a counselor with us in the canoe but we convinced some older kids to steal a canoe and get us to the forbidden side of the lake. There were a lot of bushes but we paddled up and down the lakeside until we spotted what looked like a pile of two by fours. We got out and I shit you not, there was an abandoned cabin. It was the size of a large bathroom but there it was, just the skeleton of a shack. I still remember the look on everyone’s face when we found proof of some cannibalistic horror story. We got back unnoticed and everyone was too scared to tell anyone. I had nightmares for the rest of the time I was there.
