What’s your most useful “street-smart” piece of advice?

Always have a reasonable amount of distrust towards people you are unfamiliar with or don't know, and have a healthy amount of paranoia. Keep an eye on people, if you think they're acting shifty your instincts are probably correct, give everyone an ocular patdown, body language can tell you a lot, be aware of any exits in case you need to flee, look for things that can be used as weapons in case the need arises, if you feel like you're being followed, never look directly back, use windows, car mirrors, anything with a reflection. Generally just maintain strong situation awareness, as cliche as it may seem, being prepared for the unexpected may just save your life.
