What’s your opinion on trans men being in men’s prisons?

Well no, I probably didn’t explain the best. I meant some support those things, especially in extreme cases.

The vast majority of prison abolitionist are fully against incarceration and capital punishment in almost every instance. Because it’s unnecessary basically all the time. Least that’s my understanding. I did a sociology/criminology degree, am a studying psychologist and my dads a Forensic scientist. So I’ve read and heard a lot about this stuff.

The issue with worrying about ‘psychopaths’ is they are firstly incredibly rare. It’s like 0.01% of the population if even that. Because of this there’s few concrete studies on psychopathy (which is also arguably not even a real thing).

Secondly Tv and movies tend to convince people they are a much more common occurrence than they actually are. This is the case with both crime and ‘psychopaths’.

Thirdly tv a movies misrepresent ‘psychopaths’. Your dad can’t be called a psychopath just because he was cruel. That’s not what a psychopath is. People who aren’t psychopaths can be equally cruel. People who have empathy can still not show empathy in certain situations or towards certain people and or groups. The only real agreed definition is ‘psychopaths’ are people who have no empathy, and even then the vast majority of ‘psychopaths’ are actually harmless. Because even if you lack empathy, you still need reasons to do the things you do. Lacking empathy doesn’t mean you go around killing or harming at random. It means it’s easier for you to do those things.

What’s more prison abolition wouldn’t happen in isolation. Abolitionists like myself advocate the focus shifting from punishment and incarceration to preventive measures. 99.9% of criminals commit crime for a variety of reasons that all largely preventive; such as upbringing, forced societal norms (ie sexism plays a role in why rape occurs), wealth inequalities and ableist government policies that isolate people especially those with Mh issues. With these all gone (or limited) crime would decrease exponentially. Leaving only those who are ‘psychopaths’. We don’t think prisons should be opened right now, and nothing else change. That’s ludicrous, and no one has ever claimed such a thing.

Also considering that societal and other factors play a role doesn’t in anyway mean we are saying people have no personal responsibility. Just that like everything in life there are multiple complexities to why anything happens. Even when denying there is societal causes or affects yourself, you’ve admitted a few social aspects that made it at the very least easier for someone to do those things. Such as being white, and being rich. As well as factors that made you more likely to be a victim.

The majority of abolitionists are radical leftists who again want abolition in connection with ridding the world of racial inequalities, wealth inequalities and all other inequalities. If there’s better mental health help, if race and gender and class are irrelevant; then there’s less vulnerable people. And likewise less criminals. As the vast majority of criminals (almost all convicted crime is drug use and theft btw. The majority of murders are also not premeditated) are those from underprivileged minority groups, and or have mental health issues. Such as Autism or adhd.

The final point to be made is about our current system doesn’t work. Currently noting is done to prevent any crime. All the police, courts, and prisons do is punish after the fact. Abolition is arguing for focus on prevention. It’s trying to make a world where these things are rare, rather than waiting for them to happen, or chalking them up to ‘bad people’. What’s more it’s proven that prison increases the chance of repeat offences. Prisons also serve as recruitment grounds for multiple alt-right/extremist groups.

Whilst I feel you will disagree here. No one is born a criminal, or ‘evil’. There’s zero evidence of that, hell we don’t even know if so called ‘psychopaths’ are born that way.
