There is definitely a substantial amount of critical theory and essay work related to the concept of utopia, though I'm not sure what vein of it would be most helpful to you. . .
A classic theory text regarding the issue is Louis Marin's Utopics, but I don't think that's discussing quite what you're looking for. . .
It's an interesting read regardless. .
If we're merely talking about fiction that includes utopian themes, then there are quite a few books to look at, including the obvious: Huxley's Brave New World, and that which started the (mis?) use of the term, Sir Thomas More's Utopia. . .
But there are plenty of places to look for utopian themes outside of books dealing directly with utopias. . .
