What is the scariest experience you have ever had online?

Oooh I have one.

This goes all the way back to the very early nineties; the good old dial up days of AOL and Compuserve. My computer was a 386DX w/ a 256mb hard drive and 4mb of Ram - it was the top of the line in its day :)

I spent some time on local BBS boards back then, had a couple of 'internet' friends. Didn't think much about security back then. One day my boyfriend and I are sitting watching TV one Sunday afternoon and Speakers Corner starts. This guy comes on and starts talking about this girl he met online, that he has fallen in love with ... my boyfriend and I are talking about how weird that is. I mean how can you possibly have such strong feeling about someone you've only met online?

Anyways the guy carries on about how he knows who this woman is, that he's seen her from afar, and starts describing her. He proceeds to describe to me a tee. My BF is now officially weirded out, and so am I. But I'm still thinking "nah, got to be a coincidence" Toronto is a HUGE place. Then the dude on Speakers Corner holds up a pair of red lace thongs. MY red lace thongs that my BF bought me for our anniversary. I'd lost them (I thought) when I was doing laundry downstairs in our apartment building. Nope, this fucker had found out where I lived and stolen the them. My BF freaks out. I freak out. We moved three weeks later. I killed what little online presence I had back then and never again went back to a single one of the BBS boards I was on. It was over ten years before I typed a single thing online again. It still haunts me.
