What sort of future can someone have in accounting if they don’t want to work more than 40 hours a week most of the year?

Most of my department before they were laid off all worked 40 hours and that was it. Our structure was assistant accountant -> Staff I -> Staff II -> Senior -> Supervisor -> Manager -> Director. At the staff II level you were hourly and they were very strict about not having you go over 40 hours in order to avoid paying you time and a half. At the senior level you became salary and could expect longer hours.

Many remained at Staff II for the duration of their careers. It's not like public where people wonder why you aren't progressing every year or two. So to get something like this, try applying to some large F500 companies with in-house accounting. We got outsourced to India late 2022, but many companies are not going that route.
