What state (or country) are you from, and what is the false stereotype for this place?

I have two that I believe I can claim:

Ireland, my home country:

  1. Irish is not a dialect of English, it's about as closely related to English as it is to Russian, insofar as they have a common ancestor a very, very long time ago.

  2. We're not all drunks. I am a drunk, but not all of us.

  3. We're not part of the UK. Mother of God, the amount of people from outside of Ireland & the UK that get this wrong is obscene. Not only are we not part of the UK, a huge portion of our identity is basically based on not being in the UK and not wanting to be. Not being part of the UK had been basically the goal of the last several centuries before it mostly got done.

Alaska, where I live:

  1. It's not a barren wasteland of ice and snow. It's also home to:

The largest rainforest in North America in the south

Volcanic islands to the west

Tundra in the middle

And the Arctic, which can admittedly be an icy wasteland in the winter, but come summer? It looks like this.

  1. We aren't Canadian, we just happen to be next to it. Alaskans aren't Canadians who live in America, and we don't want to join Canada.

  2. There are absolutely women up here. They tend to be tough and as outdoorsy as any of the men. Sure, they're more commonly seen in rain/inclement weather boots, jeans, and flannels instead of heels and dresses, but they are here. It's not just a bunch of dudes. Alaskan girls are top notch.
