What is stopping the Wildstar revival?

I've read many comments and they all touch upon the same greater problem with WS. That is: their intended playerbase has no reasons to play it.

  • Other than no-tab, what does that game have that makes it interesting compared to MMOs? The quests are solo grindy so there is no real community bonding, just like many others. Housing has no heavy impact, like many others. Combat generally remains interesting for the first 20 hours, afterwards it gets stale, like many other MMOs. The `fun' appears to be end-game based, as many stated, just like many MMOs. What is there to captivate the players during the long journey to max level? Not much, other than some mid level dungeons that barely anyone plays; which brings us to the next problem.

  • Who is their target audience? The problem with their game is that they apparently targeted wealthier players before going f2p. Here's the problem, people who would pay already have something else to sink their time in. Add in the optimization problems they have and their stylized graphics and you basically eliminate the majority of the wealthy players with their gaming PCs and photorealistic games. Alright, so they decided to target lower-end users right by going f2p. Here's the issue, it's 2014. LoL and CS:GO are a thing and MMOs have long lost their grasp on low-end gamers after the market starved and everything had to be high-graphics cashgrabs. And even then, the game is so demanding no college kid with a 800 bucks laptop is going to run that game smoothly, which is a shame since they used stylised graphics.

In the end, I think WS simply tried to target the wrong audience. By trying to compete with WoW (in 2014), they completely missed the opportunity to capitalise on the lower-end casual market segment that looked for immersion and exploration rather than grinding. They could've redesigned the world for more complexity or emphasised the importance of housing for socialising guilds. They shipped stylised graphics to a gaming audience that has good tier gaming setups in 2014. Pair that with technical shortcomings and they ended up missing both audiences.
