MAL scores are awful. I definetely agree with that.

I think the biggest difference between Sora and Shiro and someone like Kirito is that Kirito being over powered makes no sense in the context of the story. There's never any explanation as to how he got that powerful and what explanation they try to give is completely nonsensical. As such Kirito make no sense and the story fails because it try to play this straight. You can have an Overpowered character still.be interesting as long as you are self aware as to how over powered they are such as in Sakamoto. Which brings us to NGNL where the main characters are also over powered. What the show does is make "Believing the main characters can reasonably this overpowered" the buy-in to the story. That's what you need to believe to watch the show. Does it entirely make sense? No, but that's not important like in SAO where it completely breaks the story. The story is based around two over powered characters in this fantasy universe. As such how much you like the show is directly tied to how much you like the characters, because there is no suspense in this show. It's all about the two main characters doing cool things for 12 episodes and so found that really.enjoyable and I can understand why others may not.
