What is the weirdest interaction you ever had with a complete stranger?

I was visiting Italy once. I was staying in a small town that had zero English speakers, as far as I could tell. I'd been there for a week with almost no contact with English speakers (and I don't speak Italian), so I was usually in my own head and minding my own business, keeping to myself, tuning people out, generally enjoying my sojourn. On the last day of my trip, I was sitting out on a wall overlooking the valley, with this absolutely gorgeous sunset over the mountains--very picturesque pastoral scene, and very relaxing after a busy week running around the nearby city. One of the village cats took a liking to me since he shares the same wall, so I was chilling with him. Suddenly, this British couple with their kid walks up, asking me if it's a friendly cat and letting their kid pet it. I swear, I stared at them for ten solid seconds as it registered in my brain that they were speaking to me in English. Turns out they visit family there every year, and since it's a tiny village, they probably recognized I was new and I guess something about me screams American. But that was bizarre. I don't know why it took so long for my brain to click
