First: sit down with him and run the Net Price Calculator on the college's website. See if there's any way that price is affordable. If it isn't, then don't apply ED. There is no need to guess how much financial aid you might receive!

If getting financial aid isn't affordable, then you need to look to schools where you can get a lot of merit scholarship money. Look at schools with competitive merit where your stats are above the 75th percentile. Also add some financial safeties that offer large automatic merit for your level stats (Alabama, UAH, Kentucky, Wyoming, UNM, Utah?, etc etc).
