My 2nd cousin dated this British dude who was a horticulturist. He was obsessed with flower species. Decided he wanted to go with a friend to a remote part of the world called the Darien Gap to photograph some plants. Everyone thought they he was nuts since that area is like a demilitarized, non-police patrolled zone. No real laws there and the cartels utilized it for drug smuggling routes. It has excellent scenery but it’s really not worth it. Anyways, he hired some tour guides, got kidnapped for 3 weeks and was told that he had to fetch 5 million per person to be freed. Didn’t have that kind of money so they stalled and tried to plan an escape, but they just randomly let him go. He was advised by police, state officials, locals and even the fucking park ranger to stay away from that area. If he listened he would’ve never been in that situation
