What would it take to make philosophy (+ logic and rhetoric) a core subject in public school curricula?

There are several resources and programs for pre-college philosophy. For example:

https://www.plato-philosophy.org/teaching-high-school-philosophy/

https://www.apaonline.org/page/precollege

https://squirefoundation.org/curricula/

Admittedly, this isn't a topic I know a whole lot about, but my two thoughts are:

  • I don't think there's any need to push philosophy as a "core subject." Philosophy is mostly about reading and writing, so why not just make it a "language arts" class like "American Literature" or "Expository Writing" (or whatever high school students take these days.)

  • Teaching philosophy in grade school is not going to solve the problems with public discourse, conspiracy theories, trashy media, lying politicians, etc. Math, science, reading, writing, and history are all core subjects taught in grade school, and Americans aren't particular good at any of those things either. I wouldn't expect philosophy to be any different.
