What do you think of "wow you're exotic"? Do you take it as a compliment??

It feels very othering and objectifying. Depersonalising as well.

It also feels like I'm some sort of mystical, unknown entity, not just a person who looks a bit different to them. I'm not an alien, I'm just as human as they are, but you wouldn't think it from the way they go on.

It also smacks of fetishising and Orientalism.

This poem is fantastic. It's about the problematic nature surrounding viewing women as "exotic".

One thing the poem brings up is that "there are millions of women who look just like me". In my experience, people who use "exotic" are often the type of people who have limited horizons and don't know much of what the rest of the world is like. Their awareness of other cultures is usually low or non-existent.
