What Is Your Experience With Mardi Gras?

Mardi gras is celebrated elsewhere in Louisiana. In my city, our parades are not as extravagant. It's for us though, not really for tourists.

We also have courir de mardi gras, Mardi gras run, where it's tradition to wear disguises and ask for ingredients for gumbo. This comes from a 400+ year old French tradition based on a similar concept but instead of gumbo, they asked for things for a feast from nobles. We wear homemade costumes in various colors, a mask and a conal hat instead. Sometime during the event we sing a variation of this song -- each of the small towns have a version of it. The lyrics are similar, it's about going around asking for ingredients for the feast, namely potatoes and cracklins

Captains ride in horses and discipline with pretend whipping if you're recognized and wearing the same costume you wore before... among other infractions.

At the end, we feast on Cajun foods; boudin, gumbo, jambalaya, cracklins, etc.
