What was your scariest "A second later and I would've died" moment?

A few...

Nearly broadsided by a catering van (Ford Econoline 350) that ran a red light a good 2 to 3 seconds after it turned red. As I was about ready to go through the intersection on a green light I noticed the big truck to my left that was making a left turn suddenly stopped, so I did too. That's when the van blew through the intersection. That truck saved my life.

At night I stepped in a open manhole cover with my right leg going down. For some crazy reason there's a piece of rebar sticking up toward the center of the hole. The rebar grazed my neck. 2 inch to the left and I would have been impaled.

Sailing south off the coast of California in a 30 foot yacht 20 miles out to sea (off of Point Conception). Winds were sustained at 35 knots. We were hit with a series of 5 really big waves that came out of nowhere. The sailboat was it full throttle and the sails were reefed. We went down the side of the wave like a surfboard. This was at 1 a.m. . I was just a kid sailing with a friend of my mom. That was a hell of a moment.

While on an aircraft carrier nearly lost my head by doing something extremely stupid and sticking my head out of a line chock. The carrier had been riding up and down quite heavily and seas that were at the right wave height and swell frequency to make the bow go up and down a lot. I put my head back in adjust the last second before the water flew past the hole. I would have been beheaded or sucked out. I was an idiot.

Me and my friends made an explosive device using a bunch of firecrackers and a empty rifle shell that I got from my dad. We want to to put it inside of a metal tube and shoot a bullet at a tree. I dropped it in the tube which was stuck in the ground about 4-5 in. I got scared at the last moment and ran, and my friends followed. There was a big boom and we went out to go see what happened. There was a crater in the grass, and my neighbor's window was broken with shrapnel stuck in the drywall. The path that the shrapnel took would have been straight through me. I wasn't very smart as a child. And yes we got in trouble. I made one the following day but took more safety precautions. Like I said, I was an idiot.

In Perth. ... at a bar. Got pretty buzzed. Went with some people just some party at a house outside of town. I got in the back of an El Camino with a bunch of other people. Driver was drunk and speeding and ran off the road. Got really lucky in the car did not flip. People inside the cab check to make sure we're all okay, and we are fine other than spilling our beers all over each other. Continued on to the house. Got damn lucky.
