What's an opinion of yours that's sure to start an argument?

What would?

Killing literally everybody, so that nobody ever murders again.

Might as well make it harder for them to do so.

I'd rather make it easier for innocent people to defend themselves.

Gun ownership (and training) should be mandatory. Every person should be required to carry a handgun in public, in case he/she gets mugged. Every household should be required to keep an assault rifle, in case of a home invasion. Not only would this deter criminals, it also reduces the strain on the police force, so it's a matter of public interest.

I would even go one step further: every sovereign nation should be required to maintain a nuclear arsenal. If every country has nukes, then any war would be mutually-assured destruction, which is about as strong a deterrent as you can get.
