Ditto. I was four hours away, driving home from a work thing. She was the one that was wanting to end our relationship (because of an abusive, stalker ex that I was tired of dealing with), but I was trying work it out. Long story short, she totally faked it one day (and did a good job of it) and I totally fell for it. At first I called 911, and they wouldn't do anything because I was so far away... basically hung up on me, which to this day pisses me off. I was freaked the fuck out and called up one of my best high school friends who lived near her (and who barely even knew her) to go check on her. He left his wife and kids at home and went there for me- said her car was there, but he couldn't see any activity in the apartment. He barely knew the situation but broke into her place anyways... because friends. She showed back up while he and the cops were still there (I asked him to call when he was there since they'd listen to someone local), acting all innocent like she hadn't staged the whole thing. Nothing came of it, no charges on either side... but holy shit... I'll never forget the feeling of helplessness and panic I had that afternoon when I was four hours away and thought that the woman who I loved (however misguided it was), had killed herself over something so stupid. She's "happily married" now... poor bastard.

It's been 7+ years, but I'm still salty and numb to this day. Fuck relationships.
