What's the deal with South Africa right now?

Answer: Xenophobia in South Africa is a major problem due to lingering hatred from Apartheid. This is coupled with the fact that South Africa has an extremely high unemployment rate. Recently Nigerians have been moving to South Africa looking for work and this has upset the locals who feel the Nigerians are stealing jobs. The Nigerian government tried to comment on this and the local South African population did not like what they said.

This has led to mass riots across the country.

This is not to be confused with anti- gender based violence marches which are currently going on around university campuses at around the same time.

I am a South African myself

In my humble opinion this hasnt been in the global news because Hurricane Dorian was an absolute disaster and took focus off South Africa. Riots and marches in the rainbow nation are not an uncommon occurance either but they usually do not have long-term consequences. I am not condoning the violence in any way and it personally disgusts me but I understand why it is happening.
