what's the difference between a trash beat and a good beat for you?

bounce is everything. that just means good, infectious rhythm. a good "beat", as it pertains to this genre, forces your body to move along with it, whether it be foot/finger tapping or full blown dancing. this is partially implicit, partially learned. but its undeniable when a beat is "good" because you are enslaved by the rhythm. this should be more than true for anyone on this sub.

now my own bias comes in with melody. a "good" beat then provides a place for a vocalist. a chordal atmosphere over accessible, not-too-dynamic rhythm. complementary melody to fill the space, and standout leads if they can drive the track further without closing the room for vocals. a fun bass line that doesn't sing too much.

i am singer-songwriter originally, though i have shifted my focus primarily to production. i like to think i know what a "good" beat is but i am certainly caught in my path of production. its the artists and rappers who can't play a chord, and haven't got these biases, that will provide you with the best answer to your question.
