What's a dying fanbase that was still popular only 5-10 years ago?

Avatar (the blue aliens, not the Last Airbender). Considering how much money that movie made, it's weird that it never really developed a lasting fanbase. I know reddit likes to shit on it, but I really liked it, and I feel like a lot of other people did, too.

I guess the problem is that Cameron didn't really push the books, TV shows and other media that normally builds and sustains a fanbase. Maybe that will change after the new movies come out, but I just don't see fans taking ownership over Avatar the way they do with Star Wars, Star Trek, Harry Potter, LotR, Firefly, comic book franchises, etc.

I mean, there are more fans excited to hate-watch a new Alien or Predator movie than actually watch a new Avatar movie. I'm sure the new Avatar movies will each make over $1 billion, but no one will care about them a month after they see them.
