What's it like working in the areas where the industry thrives?

StoryArtists certainly can live on their own in the area around the LA studios, it's smarter to get roomates, but that's not for everyone. if you were to take a leap of faith, before leaving make sure you have a strong portfolio, maybe visit one of the conventions like lightbox or ctn and try to network with people first, when you think you are ready to move I'd recommend saving about $15k if you can to move with. I'd also look for a day job right away, whether it's serving or whatever. you can check the guild for job openings, if you're female WIA can help too, but it really helps if you've established some kind of network already. Some agree , others don't but you can also look into becoming a PA at a studio, you'll at least learn the process. One thing to keep in mind is that as a StoryArtist you aren't guaranteed to have a job in 3 months, 6, 1 year. you need to ensure you have an emergency fund to keep you up for your next gig. This will be even more difficult, if you say get your first gig and it only lasts a couple months, since you won't have much experience yet.
