What's it like to be working in the IT industry here in the Philippines? (especially in software programming/development/engineering)

  1. How is the work/life balance? Is the working day your typical 9 to 5, or is there a lot of overtime?

I don't remember being ever required to do overtime. I did overtime work on a weekend a few weeks ago though, but it was optional. It was an emergency though, so I had to remotely connect to the servers. I was given xx,xxx to do an optional 2+ hours of work. I'm not complaining at all.

  1. How stable is the job security? How often are the workers in this industry laid off from their jobs? or how high is the turnover rate in this field?

More or less stable. I did experienced a couple of layoffs in the various companies that I've worked with, but I haven't experienced being laid off (it was the other employees lolz).

  1. According to what I read here in the internet, people who work in IT are paid well. But for you personally, how well do you think you are paid or compensated for your work in IT - Do you think you are overworked and underpaid? or do you think you are paid well for your job?

I'm happy! =)

  1. From 1 to 10, how stressful do you feel is your job? Are there days where you feel very frustrated and stressed about your job? If yes, how frequent are they?

1? There are times when it goes up to 11 though (the servers are offline, and I can't restart the servers because the servers in the other side of the world need physical reboot, and we're losing money every second! lolz), but mostly it's just 1-2.

  1. What do you think are the pros and cons of working in the tech industry? Are you personally satisfied with your job despite its cons/shortcomings? Do you derive any personal fulfilment from working in your job?

Yeah, although I miss C, networking, and building an entire Unix-based OS and selling them as a network appliance. Web dev still makes me happy and fulfilled though.

  1. What's your opinion on the future job outlook of tech/IT industry here in the ph? Is it healthy or not?

I dunno. Most IT jobs here exist because of the US, and I'm very concerned about Duterte's threat to "cross the Rubicon".

  1. Would you personally recommend someone to work in the IT industry? Why or why not?

Yes, if you're a geek. If you don't have passion, and you think that you should switch to IT because of money, then no. Programming ability can't really be learned at school. It's like trying to enroll in Fine Arts and expecting that you can paint a Picasso after graduating. Just like programming, you can't learn how to draw at school.

*. Bonus question: Do you have other things to tell or wish to say? Please post them if you have any, I will greatly appreciate it if you do.

It's 3:48am and I can't go back to sleep... Halp.
