What's the moment you realized a friend of yours was a huge piece of shit?

I have been friends with a guy since we were 6. We were best friends growing up. When his mom had cancer, he stayed with my family, we took him on vacations and family gathering. However for as long as we've been friends, things have just never been reciprocated. He's always been a "user" or a leech. I have still always considered him like a brother, kept in contact, and always been there. But overtime, our relationship just got strained. In high school, he'd always try to steal friends from me, copy my style or hobbies--then would claim he did them first! It got old. During college he got a controlling girlfriend and we barely saw each other and he used her as his excuse. After college, he stayed on my couch for 3 month while looking for a job. I've always given him my furniture or old snowbird equipment I wasn't going to use.

I guess the turning point was over the last few years, seeing how everything he does to me, he dies to everyone--uses them for what they have but contributes nothing back. It's always his drama and the conversation is always about him. He never asks about anyone else. Recently he moved and sold all the furniture I had given him, which seemed sort of lame. I didn't really care but I have it to him to use, not sell and use the cash for pot. We're still somewhat of friends but I just can't be invested in the relationship anymore.
