My grandpa was gambling with a group of guys, used my grandma for his bet, and lost. They were in a cabin in the woods in winter, so she didn't have many places to go. Still, after being passed around to everyone a few times she had enough and fled. She ran barefoot over 10 miles through the snow before she found people to help her. Almost lost her feet, and suffered severe ptsd from the whole ordeal.

I forgot to add one detail. My mom was a baby at the time, and in the cabin with her. My grandma had to flee with my mom in hand. They're both lucky to be alive.

I heard this story from my mom years after my grandmas death. I had never met my grandma or grandpa on my moms side. Never talked with them, never got a letter or present from them, nothing. It upset me that my grandparents didn't want to know me before they died. I was complaining about it to my mom one day, and she dropped that bomb as explanation why grandma hard a hard time warming up to men, and why grandpa was never around even when she was a kid. I get it.
