I think in India we are just not allowed to speak about any family problems openly. Respecting elders is compulsory and family secrets remain within the family no matter what.

I personally grew up with a negligent father who was emotionally abusive and a mother who was his victim but was aggressive with my siblings and me. His family supported his behaviour when we informed them. My mother and siblings and I had to run away from home when I was 23 and until then my neighbours, extended family etc thought we were the perfect family. When I spoke up about my father's torture, I got labelled as ungrateful, disrespectful and weird. Finally I had to cut ties with the extended families and move out of the city.
