This is kind of long, so I'll try to summarize it the best I can. The stupidest thing I got punished for was for my faith. Seriously. It happened in kindergarten and we had a female substitute teacher come in because our teacher was in the hospital. The thing was that it was just before Halloween and we were going to have a small costume party. I was in a Darth Vader costume, all ready and excited to attend. Then, I was greeted by the substitute teacher. She saw that I was a good student and that I was a Christian. Immediately, she eyed me and got this sneer on her face.
Substitute Teacher: So, you're going to the party even though you're a Christian?
Me (cheerfully): Yes!
Substitute Teacher: And you're wearing that costume even though you're a girl?
Me (not noticing the blatant sexism): Yes!
Then, no joke, she made up two things that I did just so I wouldn't attend the party and go to detention. One, I was "disrupting the class" twice. Not true, even a few students around me defended me. The second thing was that I wasn’t paying attention and that was because I genuinely needed help with my English. I was hearing her, I was paying attention, I just wasn’t understanding. And since the school had a “three strikes your out” rule, I was told to stay in detention, not go to recess, and not to participate in the party. I still remember it to this day because I remember feeling so sad. I didn't cry though, because I was genuinely too confused to process what the heck just happened. To further hurt me, she even made me watch from the stands (the party was held at the basketball court) as the students went out in their costumes. Also, when I tried to tell my parents what happened, they didn’t believe me, adding further weight to me. Thank goodness the teacher I liked came back after Halloween. I have since forgiven my parents, since I was a little kid and I figured that I didn’t explain it well enough, but I hope that substitute teacher never got hired again. She bullied me for my faith and for being a girl wearing a Darth Vader costume. She was a sexist, bad person. I really hope she changed her ways.
